The History of Saul Funeral Homes, Inc.
Saul Funeral Homes, Inc. first opened its doors to serve the small community of Hamilton Square, NJ in 1899. Warren T. Saul (Bill's grandfather) purchased the company from Randolph Forman West. The original building was located next to the Saul Colonial Home on Nottingham Way. In addition to offering funeral service, Warren Saul provided livery service and casket finishing to those he served. It was common practice during that period to customize casket finishing to family wishes, and this service was done at the funeral home.
Warren Saul's two sons, Melvin E. and William L., joined the business in 1928 and 1935 respectively. With the passing of Warren Saul in 1931, the brothers co-managed the business very successfully and in 1940 expanded it to a second facility, the Saul Memorial Home located on Greenwood Avenue. The Saul Colonial Home was constructed on its present site, and the original building next door abandoned. With the ever-increasing size of the organization and the desire to continue the family tradition, their children joined the two brothers. Melvin's daughter, Elizabeth L. Saul, joined the form in 1959, followed by W. William Saul in 1964.
Growth and expansion continued as the Saul Memorial Home was enlarged to include a second story selection room and clinical area. In 1973, the Saul Colonial Home at Hamilton Square was remodeled and a wing was added.
The decade of the 80s created a unique challenge for the Saul organization. In May 1981, William L. Saul passed away and Melvin and his daughter, Elizabeth, retired. Shortly thereafter in September 1983, the Glackin Funeral Home in Hightstown was acquired. With a greatly diminished family staff and an ever-demanding organization, Bill Saul was left with a major staffing challenge. Bill realized if the firm was to continue, he could not do it alone. To succeed, he must build an organization of the finest staff of professionals he could assemble.
In 1987, Bill's wife Nancy joined the firm. Her administrative and organizational skills helped the company to set the stage for further expansion. In 1991, the A.S. Cole Son & Co. of Cranbury was acquired. In June of 1992, Bill and Nancy's children, Scott and Kimberly, joined the firm, making them the fourth generation to carry on the family name and tradition.
The Saul family is most appreciative of all staff members, both past and present, "our family" who have contributed to the growth and heritage of the company. Little did Warren T. realize that in one hundred years his company would be serving not only the town of Hamilton Square, but many families who reside throughout Mercer and Middlesex Counties.
We wish to thank all of you who have allowed our family the privilege to serve your family in your time of need.
